SUMMARY:Kincaid's Lupine Planting Work Party — Tuesday\, March 15 9am-3pm
DESCRIPTION:Join Greenbelt and Institute for Applied Ecology staff and fellow volunteers for a work party planting Kincaid’s Lupine (Lupinus oreganus) at Bald Hill Farm and Lupine Meadows. \nKincaid’s lupine is a threatened species and is the main host plant for the endangered Fender’s blue butterfly (Icaricia icarioides fenderi). Populations of both species declined due to habitat loss and competition from invasive plant species. IAE and Greenbelt both work to restore butterfly habitat at multiple sites in the Willamette Valley and we’re excited to be engaging the community in a joint event. \n  \nWe are planning for a full day\, from 9am-3pm. If you are only able to attend for part of the time\, you’re still welcome to join us; just send an email to mbenotsch@greenbeltlandtrust.org to discuss. \nWear: The weather could be cold and wet and the ground may be muddy\, so bring warm layers\, waterproof raincoat\, rain pants and boots. Bring a sun hat just in case. We will have plenty of gardening gloves available\, but feel free to bring your own if you prefer. \nBring: Snacks and lunch\, water bottle\, and any emergency medications you usually bring on outdoor excursions for personal use (like Epi-Pens). \nAccessibility notes: There will be no restroom facilities on-site. We will walk on uneven gently sloping ground for up to 15 minutes to the planting site. Lifting and carrying 25lb plant trays is a possibility\, but not a requirement for everyone. Kneeling and bending over for extended periods should be expected while planting. Planting instructions will be provided and no previous experience is necessary. \nLocation: We will be dividing participants between our two planting sites\, which are very close to one another (near Bald Hill). Full directions and instructions will be sent to participants a few days before the event. \n  \nSign up below to do your part restoring butterfly habitat! \n  \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Mulkey Trail Repair Work Party - Saturday\, February 12th\, 9am-12pm
DESCRIPTION:Join Greenbelt staff and fellow volunteers for a work party repairing our beloved Mulkey trail. There is a ~400’ section that we repaired back in December\, and although it is in pretty good shape\, it needs a touch-up of gravel and some drainage improvements. That’s where you come in! \nThis work party will be very physical\, but many hands make light work. With shovels and wheelbarrows we’ll spread gravel to the sections that have become muddy again\, and with digging tools we’ll shape the earth to ensure water drains from the trail rather than sticking around and stirring up mud. \nWe’ll meet at Bald Hill Farm\, then hike in about 15 minutes to our site. Full directions and instructions will be sent to participants a few days before the event. Dress in layers\, bring your rain gear and wear boots with good traction. Don’t worry if it’s chilly and wet – our work will warm you up quick! \n  \nSign up below to help get this trail in ship shape for the remainder of the cold\, wet months. \n  \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Moths vs Bats: Nocturnal Wonders **FILLED**
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \nThe Wonders of the Night! At this evening presentation and walk at Bald Hill Farm\, you will gain a hands-on glimpse into the amazing diversity of moths and bats found in our own backyards after dark. The shadow of dark offers us a good time to attract moths to light-stations\, and use bat detectors to listen for bats! \nThere’s much more to these night fliers than meets the eye. Besides being extraordinarily diverse in color\, shape\, and size\, moths are also important because they pollinate plants and feed birds\, bats\, and even people around the world! And bats are just the coolest – more than 1\,390 species of bats around the world are playing ecological roles that are vital to the health of natural ecosystems and human economies by consuming insects\, pollinating valuable plants\, and dispersing seeds.\nLending his expertise on all things ‘moths’ is Dana Ross\, an entomologist in Corvallis who serves as a volunteer Curatorial Associate with the Oregon State Arthropod Collection. He has pursued butterflies and moths throughout Oregon since the early 1980s. \nAnd representing the bat world is Stuart Perlmeter\, who has worked with bats for nearly 30 years. During that time\, Stuart has also run successful field biology programs for students from the Springfield School District in bat and watershed science research\, as well as founding The WELL Project (Water and Energy Learning Lab)\, a science program that supports hands-on science instruction in the areas of water and energy science. \nThis event is full. SUMMARY:June Book Club Gathering
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \nSave the date for Greenbelt’s Conservation Book Club summer gathering! The June read is The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier by Florence Williams \n“Imagine a miracle drug that could ease many of the stresses of modern life — a combination of mood enhancer and a smart pill that might even encourage the remission of cancer. Now imagine that this cure-all was an old-fashioned folk remedy: Just take a hike in the woods or a walk in the park. No prescription necessary. \nThat’s the proposition of Florence Williams’s fascinating ‘The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier\, Healthier\, and More Creative.’ We suffer from an ‘epidemic dislocation from the outdoors\,’ Williams writes\, and it’s destructive to our mental and physical health. The therapy is straightforward. ‘The more nature\, the better you feel.'” (The New York Times) \nThe June gathering will be held outdoors at the Bald Hill Farm farmhouse. \nBook Club Synopsis: \nThe Greenbelt Conservation Book Club is an inclusive and informal group that meets quarterly to discuss a range of local to worldwide conservation issues. Our goal is to expand our learning and knowledge based on our readings and each other through thoughts\, personal experiences\, and good conversations. Participation is free and open to all. Books are chosen by group consensus and each quarterly gathering will take place voluntarily at a host’s home. Join us! \nBook Buying: \nYou can buy books anywhere\, but Grass Roots provides a 15% club discount upon mention of the Greenbelt Conservation Book Club (in store by May 10 or earlier). If you purchase through Amazon\, please consider supporting Greenbelt at the same time through AmazonSmile!

SUMMARY:A Conversation on Conservation
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nNature has value\, but what is that value and how do we protect it? Given competing interests and visions of the public good\, how do we conserve our common resources such as land\, water\, and air? Participate in a thought-provoking discussion facilitated by Oregon Humanities. This is part of a Conversation Project hosted by Greenbelt Land Trust. Join us as we sit outside at beautiful Bald Hill Farm and explore our environmental values and question how those values are reflected—or not reflected—in current local\, national\, and global environmental policies. \nThe discussion will be framed around two readings. Reading at least one in advance is recommended to participate meaningfully in the discussion: \n\nGarrett Hardin’s short article\, “The Tragedy of the Commons” and\nGreat Tide Rising by Kathleen Dean Moore. (Greenbelt Conservation Book Club members receive a 15% book discount at Grass Roots.)\n\nSpecial guests this evening will include local writers and philosophers\, Kathleen Dean Moore and Michael Paul Nelson. \nRegistration: \nFor more info and to sign up\, email rebecca@greenbeltlandtrust.org or call the GLT office at (541) 752.9609. \nThe Conversation Project: \nWith their Conversation Project\, Oregon Humanities brings Oregonians together to talk—across differences\, beliefs\, and backgrounds—about important issues and ideas.  The goal is to connect people to ideas and to each other\, not to push an agenda or arrive at consensus. Conversation is a powerful medium to invite diverse perspectives\, explore challenging questions\, and strive for just communities. Facilitators are trained to connect their topic to the local community and to challenge participants to think in new ways. \nLeader: \nMonica Mueller is an instructor of philosophy at Portland State University and specializes in ethical and political philosophy. She published the book Contrary to Thoughtlessness: Rethinking Practical Wisdom and is interested in discussing the seemingly overwhelming problems of living together in a world with others.
