Student Board Member Recruitment

Note: We have currently paused open recrutiment for a Student Board Member while we review applications and speak with candidates. Feel free to submit an application for consideration in a future open recrutiment.

The Greenbelt Land Trust Board of Directors is responsible for providing strategic guidance and oversight for the organization.  This includes working with staff on formulating its mission, helping to develop the overall direction of the work, and ensuring that the finances, operations, and policies of the organization are well managed.  Board members work together during monthly board meetings and on individual committees to get this done.

In 2021, Greenbelt adopted a strategic framework that centers climate resilience, social justice, and community well-being in our conservation work. You can read our strategic framework which further describes our organizational values and goals HERE. All board positions at Greenbelt Land Trust are active in the organization’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), and will participate in efforts to integrate the values of EDI into Greenbelt’s daily operations and program governance. We are committed to a diverse and equitable board and staff and encourage people from underrepresented groups to apply.

The Board has a position reserved for a student member (undergraduate or graduate level).  We are looking for an individual with a passion for Greenbelt’s mission and goals who can bring to the organization the perspective and insight relative to their field of study and academic experience. The term for this position is the academic year (September – June) and requires a commitment of about 6-8 hours/month.  Student board members serve a one-year term and can be renewed for a second year. Student board members have the same voting rights and responsibilities as all other board seats.

This is an opportunity for a student to learn about how nonprofits work and gain experience in a leadership position within your community.  Student board members are provided with a full orientation to the organization, the board role, and will work with a board mentor throughout their term.

The Board is a fun, active and engaged group of thought-leaders, all helping to move conservation forward in our community!

Past student Board members identified some of the benefits they received from service as a Greenbelt Land Trust Board member:

  • Meaningful engagement in local conservation efforts
  • Opportunities to visit protected areas to participate in site tours, conduct trail maintenance, or to meet with landowners and supporters
  • Membership on your choice of committees. Learn about non-profit finance, fundraising, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Justice (EDIJ), land conservation, and more
  • Travel to conferences such as Northwest Land Camp and Land Trust Alliance Rally
