Kingston Prairie Willamette Daisy Planting Work Party

Join Greenbelt and Institute for Applied Ecology staff and fellow volunteers for a work party planting Willamette Daisy (Erigeron decumbens) at Kingston Prairie.

Willamette Daisy is an endangered daisy species present only within the Willamette valley. Willamette Daisy populations have been in decline due to loss of prairie habitat and competition from invasive plant species. IAE and Greenbelt both work to restore prairie habitat and Willamette daisy populations at multiple sites in the Willamette Valley and we’re excited to be engaging the community in a joint event.

We are planning for a full day, from 9am-3pm. If you are only able to attend for part of the time, you’re still welcome to join us; just send an email to jean@greenbeltlandtrust.org to discuss.

Wear: The weather could be cold and wet and the ground may be muddy, so plan to bring warm layers, a waterproof raincoat, rain pants and boots. Bring a sun hat just in case. We will have plenty of gardening gloves available, but feel free to bring your own if you prefer.

Bring: Snacks and lunch, water bottle, and any emergency medications you usually bring on outdoor excursions for personal use (like Epi-Pens).

Accessibility notes: There will be no restroom facilities on-site. We will walk on uneven gently sloping ground for up to 15 minutes to the planting site. Lifting and carrying 25lb plant trays is a possibility, but not a requirement for everyone. Kneeling and bending over for extended periods should be expected while planting. Planting instructions will be provided and no previous experience is necessary.

Location: We will be planting at Kinston Prairie Preserve. Full directions and instructions will be sent to participants a few days before the event.

Celebrate Natural Areas Celebration Week with Greenbelt Land Trust as we explore Kingston Prairie Preserve, a beautiful 155-acre property protecting some of the best remaining native prairies in the Willamette Valley.

May is the time to see wildflowers in bloom, and Kingston Prairie is the place to see them! This property, located near Stayton and the North Santiam River was protected by Greenbelt Land Trust in 2018, provides an excellent example of native plant diversity and grassland bird habitat. Rare plants such as the federally endangered Bradshaw’s lomatium and Willamette daisy are found on the property. Western meadowlarks, while rare in the Willamette Valley, are thriving at Kingston Prairie and will serenade you with their melodic song.

Greenbelt Restoration Manager and resident plant expert, Matt Blakeley-Smith, will help identify native wildflowers while sharing information about Greenbelt’s efforts to restore native habitats and species on the property. We will also hear from staff from The Nature Conservancy, who were the prior owners of this remarkable property. This walk is a rare opportunity to walk a conservation area that most folks don’t get to see!

We’ll caravan from Greenbelt Land Trust and hour to the site and back.
