Horseshoe Lake is a 236-acre floodplain property acquired through conservation easements and purchases with four landowners in 2012 and 2013. Located on the east bank of the Willamette River between Corvallis and Albany, this property includes a historic ox-bow of the Willamette River, and has a mix of habitats, including wetlands, prairie, and riparian forest. Greenbelt has been restoring floodplain forest and prairie habitat at Horseshoe Lake for over ten years, including planting tens of thousands of native trees ands shrubs.
The side-channel and ox-bow habitat at Horseshoe Lake is home to Northwestern Pond Turtles, which are currently proposed for inclusion on the endangered species list. 2025 is the third year that we are working with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to monitor turtle populations at Horseshoe Lake.
On this tour, we will walk for up to two miles on flat but sometimes uneven ground to tour the floodplain and prairie restoration, and end with a visit to the pond turtle monitoring station to learn about the monitoring efforts and hopefully see some turtles.
There are no bathrooms on this tour, but plenty of privacy. Please dress for the weather, long pants and closed-toed footwear are strongly encouraged as we may walk through unmowed grass and over rough terrain. Please leave pets at home.
