Thanks for your interest in joining Greenbelt’s Northwestern Pond Turtle Conservation research study!

We are thrilled to be working with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife this summer to study the population of Northwestern Pond Turtle at Greenbelt’s Horseshoe Lake property. The Northwestern Pond Turtle is a state listed sensitive species in Oregon and understanding population numbers is an important part of their statewide management. This project will include trapping and taking data on turtles over the course of the summer. In addition to researching the Western Pond Turtle, we will be capturing and removing Red-eared Sliders, an invasive species that competes with native turtles for habitat and food.

No previous experience is necessary. Tools and gloves will be provided.

Wear: Plan to dress for the weather what ever it might be. We will have waders and shoes available for volunteers that want to wade in the water and collect traps. Other volunteers will stay on land and take data on the turtles.

Bring: Lunch, a water bottle, and any emergency medications you usually bring on outdoor excursions for personal use (like Epi-Pens). Some snacks will be provided.

Accessibility notes: There are no restrooms located at Horseshoe Lake, but there are private forested areas located nearby if needed.

Notes for youth volunteer: Volunteers under the age of 18 may attend this event with approval. Please contact our Volunteer Manager, Jean, to if you are under 18 and would like to volunteer for this project.

Location: We will be working at a Greenbelt property located on the southern edge of Albany. Directions to the meeting location will be provided the week before your scheduled trapping date.

Our Registration and Waitlists are both filled. Thank you for your interest, we hope you can join us for a future event!
