Oak Basin Tour

Take a tour of Greenbelt's newest conservation easement property - Oak Basin in the Coburg Hills of Lane County. With 428 acres of diverse forest and prairie habitat, including an important high-altitude population of Fender's blue butterfly, Oak Basin is a significant addition to a regional stronghold of protected lands with high conservation values.

This tour will include up to 3 miles of moderate to strenuous hiking, including on uneven or wet ground and steep slope. Please be prepared for the weather and consider whether this tour will be safe and comfortable for you.

Landowner Jim Merzenich will share his decades of knowledge and work in sustainable forestry and land management on this tour as we climb into the high prairie for some great views and blooming wildflowers.

Oregon Vesper Sparrow Talk and Walk

Greenbelt Land Trust has been working with ornithologists since 2017 to research Oregon Vesper Sparrows at Bald Hill Farm and other Greenbelt sites. Oregon Vesper Sparrows use grassland habitats like the pastures and prairies of Bald Hill Farm, and their numbers are in decline due to lack of suitable habitat.

Greenbelt Land Trust Wildlife Technician Lisa Millbank will lead an informative talk about the sparrow, current research, and how we are working to provide the habitat it needs at Bald Hill Farm, and then we’ll take a walk to see what we are doing and hopefully, see some birds as well!

We will walk for up to 1 mile on gravel roads and through prairie with some uneven ground. Restrooms available at the beginning and end of the program. We will have spotting scopes and binoculars to borrow - no birding experience necessary!
