Mighty Acorns – Beavers at Bald Hill Farm

February 21 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Mighty Acorns – come explore outdoors with us!

We hope you can join us to learn more about our Oregon state mammal – the beaver! We have multiple sites along Mulkey Creek at Bald Hill Farm in Corvallis where we can see beaver dams and signs of beaver activity. It will be daylight, so the beavers themselves will be sleeping, but there will still be a lot of cool things find and investigate.

We will start by meeting up in the farmhouse to read a story about beavers. We will find out why beavers are known as “ecosystem engineers” and learn about many of the amazing adaptations beaver have to help them spend much of their lives in and under the water. Then we’ll head out through the fields and along the edge of the creek to a beaver dam with lots of signs of beaver activity.

After exploring the creek, we will finish our day with a hands-on activity building several miniature beaver dams, called beaver dam analogs (BDA’s) that we will place in a ditch to slow down water that is moving through too quickly!
